3dprinting painting airbrushing books spaceship honorverse

HMS Nike from Honorverse

I've recently been reading through the Honor Harrington series of military sci-fi books. It turns out that they have quite a lot of world building material with ships, bios, history etc. Here's a 3D model, print and paint of the Reliant-class HMS Nike (BC-413) from early on in the series.

ThumbnailMy intent was to have it match the style of Hobbybase' Legend of the Galactic Heroes miniature ships that I collect. I want to print out a few of the key ships from the series and build up a bit of a display with them.

I pThumbnailrinted it out, tidied it up a little, glued and then airbrushed. The small details were brush work and then I used oil-based washes to bring out the details. I think I went a bit overboard and need to practice a bit more with oil-based stuff. I'm really not that great right now and it's so messy.

Overall I'm pretty happy with how it came out. This thing is extremely tiny (around 1/11000 scale) and so getting nice detail in was particularly difficult. At this scale primer turns everything a bit goopish and the tiniest fluff and hair is massive and visible. It was also pushing the limits of detail on the printer a little. At this scale, everything gets a bit bumpy and messy.

I'd really like to have another stab at it and print it at maybe 3-4 times the size so that I can paint much more detail onto it. This scale is nice, though, and it looks great alongside all the LOGH ships. I printed eight of these and intend to go through and paint them all.

Here are some work-in-progress shots along the way.

Who I am

I'm Blake and I like to tinker with things and make stuff. When I'm not programming or developing random systems, I'm playing with electronics, doodling bits of art, 3D modelling or sculpting and painting things or nerding out watching sci-fi or horror TV.

From 2001 I worked in the games industry, eventually specialising in tools to aid in the development of video games and their engines. In 2011 I left the industry and teamed up with a few other talented composers to utilise my knowledge to help build the company 'Spitfire Audio'.

I also periodically compose soundtracks for video-games and have worked on titles such as The Stanley Parable and Portal Knights. You've probably also heard my music in random TV commercials at some point.

What I'm using to create

I use various bits and bobs to craft my shiz.

  • Phrozen Sonic Mighty 4k & Mini 4k
  • Phrozen Aqua Resin Grey 4k
  • Anycubic Photon LCD resin printer,
  • Vallejo Model Color, Game Air, various sets,
  • Iwata Eclipse HP-CS & Studio Smart Jet Pro Compressor,
  • Random cheapo airbrushes for base coats.
